Endorsements - Becoming Me
'Jo-Anne has penned a heartfelt, honest and deeply searching self-reflection, beautifully and sensitively written. I’m sure it would lead any reader into a personal inner journey of their own. It is also a proclamation of God’s love and faithfulness which will inspire and encourage spiritual reflection for all who enter into Becoming Me..

Becoming Me has all the qualities we look for in autobiography—honesty, insight, relevance and eloquence. We all have life stories that have inherent value, but not many of us possess the levels of self-awareness and honesty Jo-Anne Berthelsen displays in her latest offering. She draws out an abundance of perceptive insights from her experience. At each stage of her story she pauses to open up reflective questions for us to consider our own lives in the light of her observations. These are especially relevant for anyone considering questions of identity and vocation. And this is all conveyed in the assured writing style of a masterful storyteller.

In Becoming Me, Jo-Anne recounts the dealings of her soul with her Creator and Saviour from her birth to the present day. It is a privilege to read how she has committed her walk through life to the Lord and how he has directed her path. Her story illustrates the fact that we do not find our identity in our talents, gifts, efforts or inclinations, but in Christ alone.
Marion Andrews, author of My China Mystery
I am awed by Jo-Anne's raw honesty, vulnerability and determination. Many themes run through her courageous story. One is finding her place in a Christian world dominated by traditional values. Her poignant struggle with her worth and deep longing to live with integrity will move you.
Paula Davis, trauma counselling specialist, marriage and counselling educator, adjunct lecturer
In Becoming Me, Jo-Anne shares honestly, showing us that she has walked the walk regarding dealing with her personal issues. With Jo-Anne at your side, you too can go on a journey of discovery, using her questions at the end of each chapter to reflect on your life. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to reach their full potential as a person.

At one level, Jo-Anne Berthelsen's Becoming Me is a very personal account of her own discovery of her ‘true self’. But at a deeper level, it is a gentle invitation to journey with her, to find our own, deepest, truest self, that is, who we are in the eyes of our loving, Father God.
(Rev) Ray Evans, teacher, counsellor, chaplain
Becoming Me is a book to be read prayerfully, allowing God the opportunity to extend His healing hand as we progress. A truly honest story which takes us through the innocence of childhood to the maturity of our middle years. It describes how our early experiences leave their mark on the core of the person we become, but also how the power of God's grace and love can deliver healing into the poverty of our souls. A gentle yet challenging read.

Reviews - Becoming Me
Jo-Anne Berthelsen’s latest book ‘Becoming Me’ starts out gentle, cool and calm, drawing the reader in. But as it progresses it gains power, heat and passion and before long it becomes difficult to put down. The final chapters were compelling and I found myself relating closely to many of the insights which were so gently and succinctly expressed.
‘Becoming Me’ is an authentic and open account of the Christian journey written with depth, honesty and wisdom. Jo-Anne shares both the challenges and the joys she has experienced along the way in the changing seasons of her life. The transparency and truth expressed in her writing translates to a parable of the book’s central message. In its telling, Jo-Anne models what it is to dispense with the many layers of the false self and to find the true self created by God.
It was a joy to see all the seasons of life knitted together into one big story and to observe how God brought all of the little pieces of the puzzle together for a higher purpose.
I am very excited about the impact this book will have on the reader, allowing us to view our own lives from a wider perspective and with renewed freedom and hope.

To write ‘Becoming Me’ was a most courageous undertaking. Jo-Anne, with her skill of writing, has crafted an open and frank account of her struggle in ‘Becoming Me’. By “revealing” her inner self, many of us readers will either identify with her struggle as she evolved to where she is today, or not. Each will read it through their own lens. But all will read that the influence and support of God was always there, although at times not in a most obvious manner. He is there for us also. This book has to be on your “must read” list.

Struggles with self-doubt, insecurity and perfectionism are some of the topics covered in their book. But it is more than just that. It is an honest account of how one woman came into deeper relationship with God and at the same time discovered more about herself. Each chapter starts with a scripture verse. There are other verses and quotes from various people scattered throughout.
I found this book interesting and read it slowly a chapter a day, taking time to reflect on some of the suggestions at the end of each chapter. Eg ‘Can you identify any factors in your own background that have caused you to feel driven to overachieve?’ And in case the person who has never had that problem but is more likely to under achieve that situation is addressed for reflection as well. Or this one, ‘Consider where you were at in your life five years ago. What have you learnt about yourself as you have faced life’s challenges in the intervening years?’ I could have selected helpful reflection questions from any chapter.
Jo-Anne’s openness and vulnerability shines through this very readable book. Anyone interested in the way God leads a person into discovering their purpose in life should find this interesting. It is also a book that might be helpful as a gift for a daughter or a special young woman in your life. I also loved the cover and the relevance of the Russian dolls in the story.

Jo-Anne Berthelsen's Becoming Me is a spiritual memoir (perhaps in the tradition of C S Lewis' Suprised by Joy). She traces her journey with God from first inklings, to joyful and deeper experiences and teases out the spiritual lessons she's learned - and some she's needed to reapply. Each chapter picks up a theme or spiritual truth as Jo-Anne has journeyed deeper into knowledge of herself and God.
I found myself identifying with many of the experiences and lessons Jo-Anne relates. I was also encouraged to continue the vision and calling God began showing me in recent years - rather than to fall back on a past calling. This has been timely for me.
Jo-Anne writes with a gentleness and openness, ready to acknowledge short-comings and mistakes as well as the love, affirmation and empowerment through God's presence. She adds a list of questions at the end of each chapter that provide springboards for reflection on the truths she shares. I decided to read a chapter each day, rather than to race through the book.
I think this is a wonderful resource for new Christians but am sure that it will also encourage those deeper in the faith as well.

Well, what can I say but – well done! I loved reading 'Becoming Me' during our Christmas holiday and have just finished re-reading and reflecting over it. As always, it is a work of art. I have just finished my first reading of your beautiful new book. Now I need to read it again with the reflections and slowly. So much of it resonates with me and my journey. It is beautifully written and so encouraging. I know I still need to go deeper to find my true self . You kept to the theme so well. I love the Russian doll analogy. Marjan, Qld
I read your book in almost one sitting, and loved it! You have a such a talent for making your ideas flow...such eloquence. I love words and language and thoroughly enjoy your gift for writing. ... Thank you for being so open and honest in sharing from your heart. I felt like I was listening to a close friend talk about the ups and downs of life and the spiritual journey. Most importantly I was encouraged and challenged by your experiences. I am about to start rereading it to highlight the gems I want to remember. Pam, Sydney
